Larry Gowell will be performing at SWINGIN’ THE STANDARDS starring Larry Gowell, April 27th, 2014 at 3pm in Philadelphia, PA. Get your tickets here: http://swingingthestandards.bpt.me/.
Larry Gowell has been singing since he was in his youth, performing in the school choir and band and as a trumpet soloist. After 5 years of trumpet lessons he made his first recording at the tender age of 13. He grew up in a musical family, singing around the piano, organ and guitar at home. His brother is a singer, guitar player and song writer.
Music has always been Larry’s second love, after baseball. He was signed to the New York Yankees as a fourth round draft pick in 1967 as a pitcher and went on to play 8 years in the pros, including a short stint with the big club in 1972.
Larry has performed in many choirs and was song director for several churches. He started singing solo when he was 33 years old. He sang many solos in churches over the next 28 years. When he turned 61 he decided it was time to devote his life to music. He started performing in concerts at nursing homes all over the state of Maine. He soon was invited to sing at all the major venues and events in Central Maine, including the Franco Center, Sawyer Memorial in Greene, and the Poland Spring Summer Festival.
Larry was recently selected to sing the National Anthem at Fenway Park, and a little over year ago he won a singing contest put on by vocal coach Dileesa Hunter from Atlanta.
He has received press from the Lewiston-Auburn Sun Journal and the Waterville, Maine newspaper. Last May Larry was a guest on the popular program Bill Green’s Maine, in a segment highlighting Larry’s singing and baseball careers.
Larry is a strong baritone vocalist singing Jazz, Broadway hits, swing, pop, gospel, and some country. He sings a lot of music by Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr, and Matt Monroe, to name a few. He strives for a great deal of variety in every performance.
He is currently focusing on cabaret shows and had his biggest one yet February 21st at the Franco Center in Lewiston, Maine. He was honored to perform a duet at this show with his vocal coach, world class Mezzo Soprano Joelle Morris.
